CONTEXT

In June of 2021, a parent organization's Human Resources Department sought to develop a more robust Early Talent Development Program that included formal training sessions in areas where interns were inexperienced.

NEEDS ANALYSIS

TOOLS

  • Interviews

    • HR specialists

    • former interns

    • managers

    • organizational leaders

    • senior staff members

  • Review of previous recorded presentations

PAIN POINT

One area where interns needed more exposure was presenting high-level report-outs to senior staff members.

THE SOLUTION

FORMAL TRAINING SESSION

A formal training session would

  1. introduce interns to the concepts, nuances, and pitfalls or high-level reporting

  2. support the development of their presentations

  3. drive the interns to prioritize their projects and mange time better

  4. encourage the interns to evaluate the impacts of their work early in their internships

THE RESULTS

REACTION

4.8 /5

LEARNING

  • Mini-assignments

  • Interactive activities as checks

  • Mock presentations

BEHAVIOR

  • Leadership evaluations demonstrate that the interns modified their behavior positively

  • Peer evaluations after the final report-out to senior staff also support positive behavioral changes

RESULTS

  • Interns receive a leg up against peers competing in the job market by having high-level report-out training and experience.

  • Business better understands which problems have been improved, solved, or created as a result of the interns' work.

  • The HR team is also able to determine impact of training by evaluating internal job placement of interns before and after training.
